Question

My wife did not have health insurance due to affordability prior to our marriage this year. I was able to add her to my plan; is she still eligible for the exemption?

We got married in August, and she qualified for the affordability exemption prior.  She was added to my plan in October.  Does she still qualify for the exemption for the months she lacked coverage prior to our marriage?  How do I go about this?   Thanks in advance.

In TurboTax, if you enter that she considered health insurance to be unaffordable, then the exemption is automatically granted.

The IRS will write to you requesting proof. At that point, she will need to demonstrate that her employer's plans were unaffordable, or that plans in her area were unaffordable. The IRS criteria for how much to pay for insurance based upon income are listed in the screenshot below.
