Question

My wife died around June or July of 2022 we have been separated for over 20 years and I don't have or know any of her personal information so how do I file?

We have never filed together in fact I don't know if she ever filed cause she had no phone income except for ssi

Assuming there are no dependents involved, it sounds like you may have been filing single over the years.  Under a legal separation agreement you are considered unmarried.  You would continue to file as single until your marital status changes. 

 

However, if you have been filing as married filing separately because you were not under a legal separation agreement you can file again as married filing separately for tax year 2022 since that is the year of death. 

 

For tax year 2023 you would file single unless your marital status changes by 31 Dec 2023.
