Question

My wife is an F1 visa holder since Sep 2021, I was a J1 visa holder since Sep 2019 till Dec 2024, then became an F1 visa holder. Can we file taxes jointly?

    If you are both non-resident aliens, then no, you cannot file a joint return.   In order to file a joint return, one of you would have to a resident alien, then the other would have to choose to be treated as a resident alien. 

     

    If you are both nonresident aliens, you would need to file a form 1040NR which TurboTax does not support but our partner Sprintax does and can help with your non resident return.
