Question

My wife Mary passed away last March 25th. We always filed a joint return.

She had a considerable amount of charge accounts charged off, there was no estate, no insurance nothing. Those charge offs will be reflected on the tax return which could effect my return. So, it was suggested to me to file separate returns and indicate hers as final. Is this a good idea?

It is usually best for a married couple to file married filing jointly because you get the lowest tax rates, the highest standard deduction, and the best tax benefits. When you file married filing separately, some benefits are not allowed and others are reduced. Turbo Tax allows you to compare the results of married filing separately with married filing jointly. Please refer to the following FAQs to learn more about your options and to get instructions for how to make this comparison. https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3288477https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/4775330
