Question

My wife passed away in 2024 and her final paycheck and year end bonus was awarded to me. I received a 1099-MISC for this payment. Do I include this as income when filing?

Is this money taxable?

Yes, this income is taxable and should be included on your tax return.

Because she passed away, she received a 1099-C for credit card debt she didn't repay and a 1099-R for a 401k loan she didn't repay. Do I include this as income on my "Married filing jointly" return?  Or should I file as a Single or Head of Household to avoid this taxable income?

If your spouse died in 2024, file jointly with your late spouse unless you remarried in 2024. Any tax forms received for your spouse should be included on your jointlly filed return.
