No, she doesn't need to file as a self-employed person, unless she wants to treat this as a business and deduct expenses. Please note, that if the amount were more than $600, just reporting it as other income is not an option.

If you just enter the income as other taxable income and don't take expenses, you will be able to do that in Premier. If you do want to deduct expenses, you will need to upgrade. The upgrade process won't lose any of your data.

  1. Select Federal from the left side menu.
  2. Select Wages and Income toward the upper left.
  3. Scroll down or expand the list, find Other Common Income.
  4. Expand the section, find Form 1099-NEC and click Start to the right.
  5. Answer Yes to, Did you get a 1099-NEC?
  6. On the question, Do You Want to Enter Your 1099-NECs Now? select Enter 1099-NEC.
  7. Enter the information from the form on the next screen, click Continue.
  8. On the screen, Does one of these uncommon situations apply? select This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual, it is from a sporadic activity or hobby (this is not common).
  9. Click Continue, then Done.

The form will be added to your income without the complication of doing a self-employment schedule.

Thanks for your thorough, helpful answer.

It may have saved me reentering my earlier data. Also made me aware I need to buy business TurboTax next year if have over $600 on 1098-NEC
