I have followed the previous advice on how to add in my W2 and then a negative amount on schedule 1 (other income) along with the descriptive wording, but when I go back to my 1040 form it reduces my income on line 1 instead of on the total line. What am I doing wrong? Please help as I only have 1 week left on my extension to file.

Are you sure you are trying to enter the information in the correct place? According to the 2021 Instruction 1040, adjustments to income are entered on Schedule 1, Part II. The amount on line 26 is entered on Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 10; or 1040-NR, line 10a. Try entering your adjustments on Part II and see if that corrects your 1040.
