NY State Tax Calculation

My software calculated my NY State tax as $10,347 (IT-203 line 38).

However when I apply my Income (IT-203 line 31) against the NY State tax brackets, I calculate the tax to be $10,767.

Hoping someone can identify where I'm going wrong? Thanks!

IT-203 line 38 is the tax on the amount on line 37, not on the amount on line 31.

A lot happens between line 31 and line 38. Go to page 19 in the Form IT-203 Instructions and work through the steps line by line, reading the instructions carefully.

Also note that you can't just "apply" your income "against the NY State tax brackets." In the instructions for IT-203 line 38 there are three different ways that the tax might be calculated, depending on the amounts on lines 32 and 37. Read the instructions very carefully.
