If you are referring to the Child Tax Credit on your return, the most common reason for a child to not qualify you for the credit is that they turned 17 during the tax year.  At that point the Child Tax Credit no longer applies for them.

If you are simply looking at your return and see that there is not a credit there for your son, then there is no way to know whether he was claimed on another return.  But, if you have filed your return and you see a rejection code based on one of your dependents, then he is being claimed on another return.

My son is 8 and it is my year to claim him. Me & his father rotate. I've noticed I never changed the living months & it was still at 7 months. Is that why I didn't get the child tax credit?

The phrase “Was he claimed” at the end of your query seems to suggest that you may be wondering if your son was claimed by your ex-spouse on his or her tax return, causing you not to receive the credit.

If your return rejected with a statement to the effect that the SSN of your son matched that of a dependent already claimed on another return, then that would be the case.  You would have to file your return by mail to receive your son’s credit.

Please see the TurboTax Help article "E-file rejections related to incorrect or duplicated names, birth dates, or Social Security numbers" for additional information on why your return might be rejecting.
