Question

On W2, it has two lines for boxes 15-20. They are in CA but with different Employer's ID and Locality name (Box 20). It warns me that box 15 can only have one State.

Your employer should only have one state ID number.

You should be entering this as one line,

State and state taxes withheld

Local wages and local wages withheld.

If the W2 has this entry split, enter it as one line and use the California ID from the line with the state withholding listed.

Please verify (with your employer) that local tax for a city or county of another state was not withheld. That might happen if you live in a different state than where you work.

Thanks Kris.

My W2 looks like this

box 15                        | box 16(State wages, tips, etc) | box 17(State income tax)

CA, employer_id_1 | 12345.67                                     | 1234.56

CA, employer_id_2 | 1.23                                              | (empty)

box 18(Local wages, tips, etc) | box 19(Local income tax) | box 20(Locality name)

12345.67                                     | 123.45                                  | CASDI_empolyer_id_1

456.78                                          | 1.23                                      | CASDI_employer_id_2

Whay I did on turbo tax is to merge box 15-17 as CA, employer_id_1 & emplyer_id_2, and adding up the numbers in box 16 and 17. In this way, I merge these two rows for box 15-17 into one line. For box 18-20 I just kept them as is. Is that what I should do?

Thank you in advance.

Since CASDI_employer_id_2 withheld local income tax, as well as CASDI_employer_id_1, then please list each entry separately on your W-2 input.

For Box 20, please confirm with your employer what different localities were withheld since it only listed their employer ID number.

If Box 1 on your W-2 shows the correct total amount of Wages for both employers added together, you can add the lines 15-10 together into one entry in TurboTax.

Use the Federal ID number in Box 15.  The total of the two Box 16 amounts for State Wages should equal the amount reported in Box 1.
