Question

One of my ex employers won’t give me a copy of my W-2, I’ve called and even went in person. This is my first time ever filing taxes. How can I file if i’m missing a W-2?

This was my first job from last January, I only worked their a month. I had another job after that one and got my W-2 just fine and uploaded. I don’t know what to do if i’m missing my other one.

You will have to file a paper return that includes IRS Form 4852 if all efforts to obtain a W-2 from your employer have failed. Please follow these steps:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account

Click on "Search" on the top right and type “W-2”

    Click on “Jump to W-2”

  2. Fill out your W-2 as best you can using the information from your last pay stub.
  3. Answer any questions until you get to the "Let's check for uncommon situations" screen.
  4. Check the box next to "Didn't get a W-2" and select "Continue".
  5. On the "Let's check if you need a substitute W-2" screen, select "Yes" then "Continue".
  6. Answer the follow-up questions.

Please see What if it's February but I still don't have my W-2? for additional information.

You might have to file an extension if you need more time to file: How do I file an IRS extension (Form 4868) in TurboTax Online? Please be aware, any balance due still has to be paid by May 17th, 2021.
