Parent trying to make amendment to claim me as dependent

So I finished filing my taxes a couple weeks ago and my mom just called to say she needs my 1040 to make an amendment because I filed as Single rather than say I can be claimed as a dependent. She said it would make a large tax difference for her. I explained that I don't believe I can be claimed as a dependent but she said she with a tax lady who disagrees and says I am incorrect.

In 2019 I turned 24 in January, I was a full time student until May and I made more than the $4,000 minimum for claiming a relative.

What should I do?

Her tax lady is wrong ... if you turned 24 in 2019 and you made more than $4200 then you cannot be claimed as her dependent any longer.

Who can I claim as my dependent?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2019 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

    Qualifying child

    • They're related to you.
    • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
    • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
    • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
    • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).  FAILED the age test ... move down to qualifying relative option
      • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
    • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
    • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

    Qualifying relative

    • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
    • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
    • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
    • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
    • They lived with you the entire year.
    • They made less than $4,200 in 2019.  You FAIL the income test ... you are not any kind of dependent.
    • You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.
