part year resident tax filing

I am a resident of IL. Last year, I temporarily worked and lived in Iowa from April to September.

For all other months, I worked and lived in IL, and my IL address is my mailing address.

I have two qeustions:

1. In this situation, should I file both IL and IA tax returns as a part year resident? Or full year resident for IL and non resident for IA?

2. IL form schedule NR only allows one residency date range. Should I just put 01/01/2023 to 12/31/2023 for Illinois residency dates?

Illinois and Iowa have a reciprocal agreement, so you pay tax to the state in which you live. IF YOU WERE ONLY A RESIDENT OF ILLINOIS, you would only file and pay tax for Illinois.

Which state tax was withheld from your paychecks?

If you moved into Iowa for 6 months, you'll need to file a Part-Year Iowa return first.

Since you moved into and out of Illinois, you'll need to file a part-year Illinois return as well. Use 01-01-2023 to the date you moved to Iowa for the dates in Illinois.

Next you will allocate the proper portion of  income to each state.

TurboTax may want you to use the reciprocal agreement and only pay state tax to one state or the other, but you need to file part-year each since you moved in and out of both states.
