Paying an extra quarterly estimate

I have paid all 4 quarterestimated taxes for 2024 and find I need to pay more. Can I use another payment voucher # 4 to make the payment? Will it confuse the IRS if I send 2 different voucher #4's?

You can use the 4th quarter 2024 estimated payment voucher for the additional payment. This will cause no confusion for the IRS since the total of 4th quarter payment will be entered on your 2024 tax return.

one rule to avoid underpayment of estimated tax penalties is that withholding and timely estimated tax payments must equal 100% of your prior year's tax. The 100% becomes 110% if your prior year adjusted gross income is over $150,000.

the extra payment for penalty purposes only counts as of the date the IRS gets it. So, if you are underpaid, there could still be penalties for the earlier periods. A taxpayer can use the Annualized income method on form 2210 if that reduces the penalties.

We calculate the amount of the Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty based on the tax shown on your original return or on a more recent return that you filed on or before the due date. The tax shown on the return is your total tax minus your total refundable credits.

I point this out because an OP said the IRS disallowed the reduced penalty on the 2210 because it was not filed on or before the due date but with an amended return.
