Are you using Online TurboTax or desktop software (CD/download)?

To enter a 1099-R in Online TurboTax, here's a shortcut to that part of the Retirement Income section:

  • Open your return, if not already open.
  • At the top click on the Search tab.
  • Enter the term 1099-R without quotes (pay no attention to any dropdown suggestions while entering) and then click the adjacent small magnifying glass icon.
  • Choose Jump to 1099-R.

A few screens into the 1099-R interview, you'll come to a screen that says "Lets import your tax information" which has a search line to enter a bank/financial institution name or to click on a financial institution's logo. That is optional and only if you want to import the 1099-R, and in order to import, the institution has to be an import partner with TurboTax.  If you don't want to import it, or if your institution doesn't participate, scroll down to the bottom right of that screen and choose "Change how I enter my form", then on the next screen that asks "How do you want to enter the 1099-R" scroll down and choose "Type it in myself."

Then it will ask you "Who gave you the 1099-R?"  and there are 4 choices.  This is so it will know what type of 1099-R you have.

You'll then be able to enter the Payer's name and the info from your 1099-R.
