Qualified tuition expenses

My Financial aid for school didn't cover the whole amount of my tuition , I had to pay half of it out of pocket. those this count as a Qualified tuition expenses if not , where do I enter that information?

    Yes, unreimbursed tuition expenses that you paid out of pocket for are qualified education expenses.  You enter these expenses in the Education section of TurboTax.  Use the search bar at the top right-hand corner of the screen.  Type in education then hit the enter key, and then use the Jump to education link to be taken to this section in TurboTax.  

     

    Student loans are not considered financial aid.  If you used student loan money, that is the same as paying out of your own pocket.  

     

    Form 1098-T lists the expenses you paid and sometimes the scholarships, grants, or other aid you received. These expenses are important because they can put you in line for credits and deductions that save you money.  And scholarships and other aid may be tax-free depending on how they are used.

     

    If you do not have a 1098-T by now, contact your school.
