do you enter the amounts paid to the college even if you paid them using funds from a 529?

    Yes, all funds used to pay the college are expenses. Then you will enter the 1099-Q to subtract out the difference, maybe. Generally, the 529 is best put towards room and board first, then tuition. See my 529 example.
