Quick question: overpayment into family HSA through one spouse's HSA?

Hi all,

Just a quick question. I have a HDHP with my company and have my whole family on my plan (wife and 2 kids).  Only I contribute to a pretax HSA.  Am I allowed to contribute to a family max of $7300 for year 2022 just under myself?  TurboTax says I over payed, however I read that a family HSA max is $7300.  Does this $7300 have to be contributed by both my wife and I?

Granted, I haven’t finished TurboTax completely so this over payment might change, however I’d just like to know for year 2023. Thanks

I do not believe based on what you posted and what the guidance is that you have overfunded your HSA.  If the end result as you currently have it continues please check back here for additional assistance.

Hi, I just want to confirm.  I have a. HDHP that only I pay into (I have myself, wife and kids).   My wife does not have insurance.

I contributed max $7300 as I thought I could for the year for family but have only finished the “wages and income” section. It states I have overfunded my HSA and the $7300 was added to my income.

Is there a section later in the TurboTax interview that corrects this overfunding of the HSA (saying that I had a family plan)?

    Thank you

Yes. Double check the following entries:

    1. W-2 for the amount contributed, and
    2. The amount you may have entered into the HSA section or haven't answered all the appropriate questions yet.

The main reason you might get an 'overcontributed' error for your HSA is that TurboTax picked up your HSA contributions from your W-2, and you also entered them again in the HSA section.  The following article will provide details to enter your HSA information.

    • Where do I enter my HSA contributions? (click the hyperlink also)
      • Go through the HSA section and answer the question about being in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and select family plan.
