Question

Reached e-file limit of 5 returns, but I've only filed 2 so far. Previous returns were rejected so I had to refile multiple times.

I've only filed 2 e-filed 2 returns, but I'm getting the error that I exceeded 5. The returns had errors so I had to refile multiple times. How do I correct this?

The IRS limits the number of e-filed federal tax returns to five per tax software license.  See requirement number 5 on page 31 of this IRS Publication: IRS Pub 1345. The IRS requires that software developers ensure there is no more than 5 electronic files from one software package or from one email address.

If you need to file more than five returns, you can:

    1. Print and Mail: You can use the software to prepare additional returns but you cannot e-file them. : You can print additional returns and mail them to the IRS. There’s no limit on the number of returns you can mail
    2. Use Different Software: Consider using  TurboTax  online, or purchasing another TurboTax desktop software.

don't be careless with the SS number you enter for yourself, spouse or dependents.

That is the root cause of the problem you have.

The IRS counts it as an electronic file even if the file ends up being rejected.

"The IRS counts if as an electronic file even if the file ends up being rejected."

This is called, jumping to conclusions.
