Question

Received 1099-G for deceased mother. Put on final 1040? Estate 1041? Neither?

  • Mom passed January 2019
  • Received state tax refund later in 2019 for 2018 tax year
  • Mom itemized in 2018
  • Estate will have >$600 income in 2019, so I will file 1041

Since she received the state tax refund after she passed, then I don't believe that I would file the amount in her final 1040 (2019 tax year), as normal for 1099-Gs for years with itemized deductions.

Would I put this 1099-G/state refund amount as income to my mom's estate as part of her Form 1041 for 2019?  As "Other Income"?

Or would I take no action on the 1099-G?

Thanks for your guidance.

Yes!  If an estate return (Form 1041) is required to be filed,  then you would include it on the Form 1041 as Other Income.
