Question

Received Form 6513 Today that Denied My Form 7004 Extension Request Stating I Filed after the Deadline. But I Have Proof. How Do I Appeal?

I received Form 6513 in via USPS mail today. It states my Form 7004 Extension Request was Denied because the Application was filed after the deadline. Form 7004 was returned and had "Envelope Post Mark March 22, 2022" & "Received March 28, 2022" stamped on it. However, I know I mailed it March 14, 2022, as I kept a copy of the certified mail receipt and the USPS receipt both dated March 14, 2022.

This happened to me once before and the letter I received told me how to dispute the decision. This Form 6513 has nothing on it about disputing the decision. I've written a letter and made copies of my receipts. Can someone please tell me how I dispute this decision given there is no guidance on the Form?

Did you e-file your return after you printed and mailed your 7004?

Regardless, you should follow the procedure as outlined on the prior 6513.

I'd suggest sending a letter requesting reconsideration of the denial to the IRS office that processed the original 7004.  If you're not sure of the address, see Where to File in this IRS reference:

Thanks for your replies.

@TomD8  I have Copies of everything. I'll take you advice and mail All documents and a request to reconsider.

@Anonymous_  All taxes are paid, but I have not filed the return yet. It's my understanding that I have until September 15 to do so. Please let me know if I am mistaken.

Thanks!

The extended due date is September 15 assuming they accept your proof of filing form 7004 on time.

(If you have proof of mailing on the 14th but it took the PO a week to stamp the envelope and send it out, you might want to complain to the postmaster, and find a different post office to do your business.)
