Question

Received unemployment, the california return is calculating as if we owe overpayment for the aca premium when should be zero? We are filing in 2 different states.

First state return works fine, the second state return for california isn't acknowledging the unemployment compensation and saying that we don't qualify for premium subsidy because income is too high, therefore charging us the premiums we paid...We should not owe anything as we received unemployment and the aca premiums where fully qualified for. Is this a software glitch?

Unfortunately, California includes unemployment in the ACA calculation.

From the Covered California website -

Should you include traditional unemployment benefits in your household income for Covered California or Medi-Cal or CHIP?

Yes. Traditional federal and state unemployment benefits are considered income for Covered California, Medi-Cal, and CHIP, and you should include it in the income you report while using the Shop and Compare Tool.
