Recently Married - Wife's name Changed - Taxes Rejected with both new name AND old name

I'm recently married (November 29th) and filed jointly with my wife, whose name has recently changed.

She has gone to the SSA and updated her name on her Social Security Card. Our return was rejected because 'The name or Social Security number for the second taxpayer (spouse) doesn't match IRS records.

Thinking that maybe they simply don't have the latest information, we tried refiling with her maiden name. This too was rejected. We are certain her social security number is correct.

Why is this happening? This is extremely frustrating.

There is a time lag between when you file a name change with the Social Security Department and when the IRS records are updated.  This appears to be the issue with your return.  This may take a while, past April 15, 2020, for the records to match up.  You can file by mail and your return will not be rejected due to the mismatch in names.
