If you elected to have your tax preparation fees directly debited from your refund, that can explain why your refund was less that what was stated in the program.

If the amount is more than your tax preparation fees, you may want to call the IRS and/or your state (depending on what refund was short) and ask them to look at your taxpayer account and see if any adjustments were made to your return and if that explains why the refund was lower.

The most likely reason for not getting the amount that you thought you would get - other than deducting the cost of the filing - is that the IRS matched up the documents that you entered with what the documents that they were given by employers, banks, etc. stated and they mismatched or you missed one. If it looks like a simple misread of a number or something, they will correct it, but they also will send you a detailed explanation of exactly what they figured out and why. They will allow you to question them by giving more information, etc. but they won't change the amount up or down without telling you  why.

I have had that happen, but it was something that I didn't know about. They added in the interest received from another source from whom I had not received the appropriate form and had not thought about.

But their descriptions about the subject are very succinct and don't beat around the bush - they are direct and the language that they use is very clear.

If the amount received was less than the amount expected and the adjustment was because of income items that the IRS had on file or another IRS adjustment, they will mail a letter to you with an explanation, usually within 7-10 business days.

If you don't want to wait for the letter for an explanation, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 from 7 AM-7PM in your local time zone (expect long hold times during tax filing season.)

Another common reason for differences is a treasury offset - there is an automated line you can call to check to see if your refund is or was subject to an offset for federal debts, and that number is 1-800-304-3107.

TurboTax does not get information from the IRS or your state about your refund after the initial confirmation that your return has been accepted.
