Rejected E-file - dependent

My rejected e-file return claims that my college-student dependent son did not check the "Someone can claim you as a dependent" box on his own tax return, BUT he DID check that box. This "error message" makes no sense. What should I do?

The only thing you can do is mail in your tax return. The IRS already has a tax return with your son's information and won't accept a second e-filed return with his information.  You and the other person using your son's name, Social Security Number and birth date will receive a letter from the IRS to verify who can claim your son. This will probably delay the processing of your return.

If you think your son's identity was stolen, please see Identity Theft: What to Do if Someone Has Already Filed Taxes Using Your Social Security Number.
