rental relief payments

I am a renter who received assistance for rent last year.  I am reading it is not included in my income.

Why did I receive a 1099-misc for the amount paid to me if it is not taxable?

The answer to your question depends upon the nature of the assistance that you received and whether you are referring to Federal taxes, state taxes or both.

Do you mean that it is not taxable on the Federal 1040 tax return?  In what box on the 1099-MISC is the income reported?  Or it is not taxable on your state tax return?  Or both?  If you mean your state tax return, what state are you referring to?

The IRS issued guidance on the Federal tax status of special payments made by selected states in 2022.  The payment that you received may be listed there.
