Question

Returns rejected due to duplicate 1099 - R is INCORRECT

Is there someone I can speak with directly or a number I can call to speak with a representative for assistance.

My Mother and Father filed their tax returns using Turbo tax (which they've been doing for the last 5 years) and this year their returns were rejected b/c it appeared that they identified 2 1099-R forms that were entered.

Yes there are 2 1099-R form statements for the same Payer BUT one is a form for my Father and the other is for my Mother.  They each have their own personal accounts which is why there were 2 1099-Rs entered separately.  These were filed the same way with their 2019 tax returns and were accepted.  Who I can I speak with directly to get this straightened out.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

There's any number of ways to make the 1099-Rs that are being treated as duplicate different.
    For one of the 1099-Rs:

    • enter a date in Box 13
    • enter an account number
    • change the zip code in the payer's address to point to some other city.
    • enter an amount in box 8
    • enter an amount in box 17 or 19

Glad to see some response to this question because I had the same experience despite successfully filing in previous years.

I took a slightly different approach; hopefully it will be enough to avoid having my return rejected. While I was not comfortable entering an amount in any of the boxes without understanding implications and did not have a "Box 13" or anywhere obvious to enter an account number. I did a couple of other things:

    1. I removed the "ZIP +4" information from the Payer's ZIP code on one of the 1099-Rs so there are only five digits.

    2. I changed the name of the Payer name just slightly (e.g., changed "Company" to "Co."

I won't know if the return was accepted until tomorrow, but I'm hopeful these minor differences will avoid the false rejection behavior.
