Mother in law died in 2011. No will found at that time, so no probate. Did not have to file with IRS at that time, no taxable income. Only asset was a home. Home also occupied by her daughter, also no income to be taxed. In 2020, daughter died of Covid. In cleaning out the house, Mom's will found. Probated with my wife as executor of estate. House finally sold in April of 2021. Tried to start a return for the estate, but when questioned regarding date of death, Turbo Tax would not accept a date of death as 08/11/2011. How do I proceed with Turbo Tax in this situation?

You tried to start a return for the estate with which TurboTax product?

An estate income tax return (Form 1041) cannot be prepared and filed with a TurboTax personal income tax preparation product (such as Deluxe or Premier).

In order to prepare an income tax return for an estate, you need TurboTax Business (link below). Note that TurboTax Business must be installed and run in a Windows environment; there is no online or Mac version.
