Question

Second W2 only has box 18 and 19 entries for a different State. Do I file return in two States?

I received two W2's from my employer. The second one is for PA where I travelled for less than a week, and has entries in only boxes 18 and 19 (locality taxes). Rest of the W-2, except for boxes 5 a,b,d, and box 20 is empty. Will I have to file State tax returns with both NJ and PA?

Yes, if you are a PA resident, nonresident or a part-year PA resident, you must file a 2022 PA tax return if:

  • You received total PA gross taxable income in excess of $33 during 2022, even if no tax is due with your PA return; and/or
  • You incurred a loss from any transaction as an individual, sole proprietor, partner in a partnership or PA S corporation shareholder.
