Question

Section 179 Vehicle Deduction

I bought an SUV in late December 2024.  It is over 6,000 pounds.  I put 179 miles on it in 2024, 108 of which are documented work miles. I expected to get a section 179 deduction though the sw will only give me a few hundred dollar mileage deduction. I tried this in Turbotax 2023 using the exact same numbers and it provided the 179 deduction in the thousands.  Did the 179 deduction go away in 2024 or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the help,

You must be doing something wrong, as the section 179/Special Depreciation Allowance deduction is still available in 2024. On the screen that says You've got a standard mileage deduction of $, you need to choose the Yes, I'd like to see if my actual expenses give me a bigger deduction option, as opposed to the standard mileage deduction option. Also, you need to make sure you enter a date in 2024 for the date you started using the vehicle in your business. Later in the routine you will be asked if you want to use the actual expense method again, which you have to agree with.

Also, you need to indicate that the vehicle is over 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
