Question

Sent an on time payment to IRS for 2019 taxes, they applied this to 2020 taxes as pre-payment. Told by IRS that we still needed to pay 2019 on time, so we did. What now?

We have confirmed that our 2019 taxes were paid, but the IRS representative said there was no way to get rid of the pre-payment they made towards our 2020 taxes. We asked to speak with a manager or someone who could assist and were told we would receive a call back in 30 days!

Where do we enter the pre-payment the IRS made towards our 2020 taxes?

Unfortunately the IRS does not give refunds based on prepaid taxes.

However, you can get credit for them on your 2020 tax return.

To post estimated taxes that you've already paid:

  • Start at Deductions & Credits
  • Scroll down to Estimates and other taxes
  • Select Estimated Tax Payments
  • There is a list here of various Estimated taxes that you may have paid.
  • Select Federal estimated taxes for 2020 (Form 1040ES)
  • Did you pay federal estimated taxes for 2020? - Yes
  • Post your information to First Quarter and change the date.
