Why did the program say you needed to use Deluxe?

Did you then file the return using this program?

In the regular Turbo Tax Free Edition, information that you can enter is limited now.  Under the new tax laws, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a little Form 1040 that has six extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.

If you want to go back to the Free Edition you can Clear and Start Over

There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state.  And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE,  etc.

NOTE:  You will have to setup a new account with a new username and new password or it will take you back to regular Turbo Tax.

To qualify for the Free File website  you just need to meet one of these 3 things
AGI $34,000 or less
Active duty military with AGI of $66,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)

In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website.  Click on the bottom Orange button I Qualify Start Now and set up a NEW account or it will take you back to regular Turbo Tax.

Im using a W2, as soon as I have reached near completion the site then tells me I need to upgrade to continue. At this point Im contacting a lawyer since I don't trust your system and I don't want to be held in jail for your system making it look like Im attempting tax fraud. Since it has deducted the 101 dollars from my return and keeps asking more nonsense.  This turbo tax isn't user friendly and a rip off. 101 dollars doesn't seem like much to some of you but that is part of my yearly dmv money. Thanks for screwing me turbo tax

If you have a box 12 retirement plan contribution on the W-2 then you probably qualify for the savers credit that requires a schedule that the free version  does not support.

1) You might be able to use the Freedom Edition for incomes under $33,000 and supports all states and most forms.

And get the credit.

The Freedom Edition is part of the IRS Free File alliance and is totally separate from TurboTax website.

How do I switch to TurboTax Freedom Edition?

2) In the "savers credit" interview answer "yes" you are a student.   The answer does not go on the tax return or affect anything else, it simply "fools" TurboTax to remove the credit.

When you get to Free File website use the link to "I Qualify, Start Now" at the bottom instead of the sign in link. And you have to create a new account, if you use the same account info it will take you back to Turbo Tax.

How to switch to the Free File website

Looks like you first need to log OUT of your regular Turbo Tax account first.
