should i claim 0 or 1 exemption on w4?

i honestly don't remember ever doing a w4 when i was first hired by amazon in 2016. but i was given a notification saying it's time for me to update it. i am single with no dependents nor can be claimed as one. i have never owed taxes before. i could really benefit from having less taxes taken out but i do not want to owe any next year and i am anxious about getting a penalty. some sites say i can claim '1' exemption for myself, but others are saying it might not be a good idea. i am genuinely anxious about the situation and don't quite have a full understanding. i'm just curious of the things that will or will not happen if i continue to claim '1' for the year.

The IRS changed Form W-4 which may be the reason your employer is asking you to update your withholding. The new W-4 eliminates exemptions. Instead it asks you to list children under 17 and other dependents. It's usually best to withhold to match your actual tax return.

TurboTax has a W-4 calculator to help you decide if you want to boost your refund amount or increase your take home pay.
