Question

Should I file my state tax return when my state tax return is the same as what I paid in? In the passed it is less than half.

Do you mean your state refund is the same as the amount that was withheld from your paychecks?  We cannot see your tax return.  There are some scenarios where you could get back all of the state tax that was withheld--but we have no details from you.  For example, if you are retired but still working part time and live in a state that does not tax retirement income, you may be under the threshold to owe any state tax, and get it all back.  What kinds of income did you enter?  What state?  What is in box 16 and in box 17 of your W-2?  Did you double check to make sure you entered all of that correctly?
