If your total income including Social Security is under $10,000 then you most likely do not need to file a return for 2021.  However, if $400 or more of your income is from self-employment, or if you had Marketplace insurance and received advanced payments for the Premium Tax Credit, then you do need to file a return.

Take a look at the following TurboTax help article for more information.  Also, if you had Federal taxes withheld from any source of income, you should file a return anyway to get a refund of those taxes.

Do I need to file a federal return this year?

State filing requirements may be different

.

How do you support yourself on less than $10,000 per year?  Are you married (and does your spouse have income)?  Or are you a dependent of someone else?
