An extension for filing the federal tax return can be completed and filed at any time on or before April 15, 2024.  The extension does not extend the date for paying taxes owed, those must be paid on or before April 15, 2024 to avoid a failure to pay penalty.

Maybe.  If you are still collecting information or feel that you aren't ready to file, you can certainly file for an extension. Just remember that an extension to file your return is not an extension to pay any balance that might be due.

An extension gives you until October 15, 2024 to file your taxes instead of the tax deadline of April 15, 2024. You must file an extension by April 15, 2024 to get extra time to file your taxes without a penalty. There's no further extension past October 15, 2024.

To  file an Extension:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click on Federal tad.
  3. Click on Other Tax Situations.
  4. Click on down arrow to right of Other Tax Forms Amend return, file extension, estimated taxes, miscellaneous forms.
  5. Click on Start to right of File an Extension.

Each state has its own rules regarding extensions. If you want more time to file your state taxes, select your state for applicable information.
