Should I really be receiving a refund if I was unemployed for the whole of 2023, but received AZ disability payments with a W2 which states my income as $6,553?

Possibly, it depends if Federal tax was withheld.

That would be listed in Box 2 of your W-2.

Look at your 1040

line 16 shows your tax liability

line 25a shows tax withheld

If the tax withheld is more that your liability, you would get a refund.

You might also get a credit which would increase your refund.

Select “View Tax Summary” on the TOOLS CENTER screen
Select “Preview my 1040” which now appears on the left side-bar
