Question

Should my college kid file taxes?

I cannot find the answer in the forums to my specific questions. Apologize if this is a repeated one. I am claiming my college kid as dependent on my taxes. I received 1098-T from college. She earned around $550  in 2020 as a part-time employee. She received W2. There was no federal tax withheld (box 2) on her form. So, she is neither receiving refunds nor she needs to pay any taxes. Should she still have to file her taxes with Federal and state? I entered her information in TT and TT doesn't flag about this. But when I checked IRS blogs it says she doesn't need to file taxes. Why TT is not flagging this (why it is allowing me to file her taxes)? I am confused. Please advice.

No, you do not need to file a return for your college-age-dependent daughter. Her income is under the filing requirement and she had no federal withholding that would be refunded.
