Question

Should the advance Child Tax Credit payment be reported by just one spouse if married, filing jointly?

My wife and I received the advanced child tax payment from July to December. While filing online, in the Child Tax Credit payment section, it asks how much I was paid out and how much my wife was paid out. It offered a link to the IRS portal to verify the amounts, and this is where I got confused. The amount under my name is exactly what we were paid. The amount under my wife's name is the same amount. So it's showing each was paid, but our bank account only reflects one of us being paid. What I'm wondering is do I put the amount we were paid just under my name? Or should I divide it in two and say I was paid half, and she was paid half?

You will each get a letter from the IRS later this month showing how much was paid to each of you. In TurboTax enter the exact amount shown in each letter. Do not file your tax return until you get the IRS letters.

A return with CTC on it will not be processed prior to mid to late February so don't be in a rush to file.

The IRS has not posted what is going to be on the letter but the instructions should tell you what you need to enter  ...   however in the TT program you can enter  1/2 under each spouse  OR   all of it under one spouse  just as long as the total is correct.  These entries in the TT program are not part of the tax return being filed.
