Question

Should we file a joint return for 2020, or should I file separately in order to recover my 2nd stimulus payment that my spouse received but I did not?

We received a combined check for the first stimulus payment in May 2020. No issues. But for the second stimulus payment, my spouse got a check and I did not. Our income source is only SSI. We did not file a 2019 return because we were not required to.

You should file a return for yourself to recover your stimulus check. It would probably be simplest to file as married-separate.

When you prepare your tax return for 2020 in TurboTax, you will be prompted to enter how much you received for your stimulus and then the program will calculate the amount of stimulus due you based on your income, number of dependents and payments already received. If any additional stimulus is due you, you will receive a refund.

You will see the options when you are done entering your tax information and proceed to the review process.

You can file a tax return in 2020 to get your stimulus check, even if you aren't required to otherwise.
