Question

Since I owe taxes, how do I file this return? In the past when I have a refund, you automatically file it for me both Federal and State. G. Santos

You can efile it the same way.  You can either enter your bank info to have the IRS pull the tax due out of your account or say you will mail a check and it will print a 1040V voucher.  Then you can mail a check or pay directly online at https://www.irs.gov/Payments

You will need to pay the Turbo Tax fees with a credit credit card before you can print or file.  Just keep going though the FILE tab and watch the screens.  After you pay the Turbo Tax fees be sure to continue on to the very end and hit the big orange Transmit Returns Now button to efile.

By the way,  the tax due was still due back on April 15.   So the IRS may send you a bill for some interest and penalty.  Did you make any estimated payments you need to enter or a payment with an extension?

You can still e-file with a balance due.  You can pay by entering a credit/debit account so that the IRS can pull the payment from the account.  You can e-file but mail in the 1040V voucher with a check or money order postmarked by October 15, 2019.  Or use the IRS site to pay.

If you owe the state, most states want a mailed check or money order, or a payment on the state site.

Your extension gave you extra time to prepare your 2018 tax return documents.  It did not give you extra time to pay.  If you did not pay your estimated 2018 tax due by April 15, 2019 then when the IRS receives your 2018 return and your payment, they will calculate your penalty/interest and bill you later.  TurboTax will not calculate the penalty or interest.

You have until October 15, 2019 to e-file your 2018 tax return.  After that, e-filing for 2018 will be shutting down, and a 2018 return will have to be printed, signed and mailed instead.  The online software will also be shutting down, so if you are not finished preparing your 2018 return by then, you will have to download desktop software to a full PC or Mac to finish the return.

When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due.  Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return?  Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes  This will show up on line 17 of your Form 1040
