This is a user community forum, and so far we don't know what all you did, but I'll ask a bunch of questions about 2 possible scenarios so you can be instructed how to proceed.   Which of these 2 scenarios is yours?

First possible scenario:

Did you use Online TurboTax by mistake instead of the software you purchased at Costco that you were to download  and install onto your computer?    Did you install the software?    If you used Online TurboTax by mistake, yes, it will charge you since it is a different product; they are not interchangeable.     If that's what happened to you, we can tell you how to download your *.tax2024 data file you started online, so you can finish and file from your desktop software you purchased without starting over.

Second possible scenario:

If you ARE using the installed desktop software purchased at Costco and installed onto your computer, there may or may not be additional fees, depending on what options you chose.    More info below.

NOTE:  Also be aware that if you purchased the desktop Deluxe from Costco, it comes in 2 versions--one that is combo Federal and State, and a version that is Federal-only.   So if you bought the Federal-only version of Deluxe and are now trying to add a state return, that will charge you for the state program.

  • In the desktop software if you efile a state return, there is a $25 state efile fee (except no fee for NY state.)   There is no fee to print and mail the state return.
  • There is also an option to purchase Audit Defense, if you selected that.
  • And here's something to watch out for:   If you choose to pay any of those fees with your Federal refund, that adds an extra service fee of $40 ($45 for California filers where it is named "Premium Services.")

So when you report back which scenario is your issue, hopefully someone will be able to tell you how to proceed.    Such as if Scenario 1, moving your data file to the desktop version to continue.  Or if Scenario 2, how to remove some of the fees (other than the state efile fee.)

I purchased the Deluxe Federal only since I live in Nevada and don't need the state filing.  I down loaded the License info and was not challenged as to why I did that.  Somehow I was routed to the on-line version and didn't know I was going to be charged until near the end, after  number of hours of input.  Bottom line.......I paid the on-line fee and was able to return that which I bought to Costco for a full refund.  I told the turbo tax rep that there should be a stopgap input that will challenge you as to why you inputted info that was "not needed".  She agreed and was going to take that up with her superiors.

I also wonder how you got into the Online version.   At what step?  Did you get the Desktop program installed and activated with the License Code?  How far did you get?  Too bad you didn’t post here before you paid or filed.   You could have moved the online return to your Desktop program without paying for Online.   Were you even able to transfer from the 2023 return on your computer?
