There are many factors that could influence the TurboTax program to crash.

1. Please make sure you're connected to the internet in order to ensure software updates and full functionality of your TurboTax program.

2. Confirm you meet the system requirements for Mac. Confirm you meet the system requirements for Windows.

a. To install and update software on Windows, you need Administrations Rights.

3. The next variable to keep in mind is the antivirus and firewall software programs on your device.

a. Uninstall TurboTax.

b. Disable antivirus and firewall software programs before reinstalling.

c. Reinstall TurboTax.

d. Re-enable antivirus and firewall after installing. (You don't have to disable them when using the program itself, only during installation.)

4. Manually update TurboTax.

No, you don't need to worry about the accuracy of your return.  But if you are concerned, be aware that TurboTax has an Accuracy Guarantee.  For more information, see the following:

Online version of turbotax2020, Asssit-Live keeps crashing on Filling...have been trying to file my return for over 2 days.

Right now the ONLINE system is completing a 2021 return  not 2020 and efiling is not open yet which is lucky for you that you could not file the 2021 return with 2020 information ... that would have been a giant nightmare for you.  FYI ... always review the return before filing it (and save the PDF for future reference)  ... if you did then  you would have seen you were on the wrong tax year forms.

So first clear the incorrect 2020 info from the 2021 program  and then use the correct 2020 program for the 2020 return.

To complete and file a 2020 tax return using TurboTax you would need to purchase, download and install on a personal computer one of the 2020 desktop editions from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

A 2020 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.

If you want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand. Here are some basic forms…..

Here is the IRS 2020 Form 1040
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2020.pdf

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s.pdf

And 2020 Instructions
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf

2020 Tax and EIC Tables
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040tt.pdf

Sch 1 :
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s1.pdf
Sch 2 :
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s2.pdf
Sch 3 :
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s3.pdf

Then when you do file 2021 enter 0 for the 2020 AGI since you are filing 2020 late.

You have to print and mail prior year returns. When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return. Don’t forget state.
