Question

So-called free state filing

I've used Turbotax for years, but for the last 5-6 years, I've been charged for all of my state filings (the first is supposed to be free).  Then, new this year, as an Advantage member, I'm supposed to save $5 off state filings ... nope - charged the full amount.  I guess I'm printing copies and mailing them in this year.  So much for the advantage.

Sounds like you were confused about the state e-file fee when you use desktop software.   With desktop software, you get the download program to prepare a state return, but there is always a fee to e-file the state return.  Always.   You can avoid the state e-file fee by printing the state return and filing it by mail instead of e-filing it.

I disagree.  The first state filing is free --- it even asks if I want to use my free state filing when I'm ready to file and I always click on "YES".   Same as this year.  Then it charges me.  I used to do the taxes for family members and one was free and the other four I paid for.  It's always been a perk with Turbotax.

We would be interested to see a screenshot or a link to the information you have that says the first state e-file is free.    That would also be a good thing to discuss with customer support.

No one in the user forum can resolve a billing issue.  If you have a question about your TurboTax fees or billing, make sure you use the word “billing” in your request for help.  Do not use the word “refund.”
