Solar credit + other home energy improvement decreased my refund?

Hi there,

This year we were fortunate to add solar panels to our home as well as new garage doors. I entered the solar first, and it all went fine. Interestingly, though, when I put in the new garage doors that we added, my expected refund actually went down. That was a surprise. I was wondering if anyone might be able to shed some possible light as to why that would be. It may help to know that my income was not sufficient to use up the entire solar credit this year, so that will have to be spread over a few years. I have no idea if this is right, but my first thought was to wonder whether inputting in those garage doors into the software caused TurboTax to use a lesser credit and then punt more of our solar credit to a future year. Anyway, the difference was significant a d surprising. Thanks for any information you might be able to provide!

You will want to get a pdf of your tax return now, remove the garage doors, get another pdf and compare the 2 to see which numbers are changing where.  The non-refundable credit could also be moving others, like child credit and changing the refundable portion.
