I feel that TurboTax need to be clear and precise with their instructions with regards to IP PIN numbers, so I wrote this self-help guide helping fellow tax payers!

For you folks trying to submit your IRS tax returns and getting rejection due to incorrect IP PIN because of the difference of 6-digit pin number from IRS versus 5 digits from TurboTax message; the requirements are two different set of pin numbers. Let me be clear, these are two distinct pin numbers.

For example, the IRS PIN number is number provided by the IRS; to obtain the IRS IP PIN number point your browser to https://www.irs.gov/iden[product key removed]-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin and follow the directions and instructions in obtaining a PIN number. Conversely, you can request one from IRS via snail mail. When you have the IRS PIN number available, simple login to your TurboTax App and follow these directions:

Here's how to enter the IP PIN.

  • In TurboTax Home & Business click the personal tab. (In other versions click the Federal Taxes tab.)
  • Click "Other Tax Situations.
  • Scroll down to the section "Other Return Info."
  • Click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for "Identity protection PIN." <--- Enter your IRS IP PIN number
  • Save

When you are ready to file your return online, TurboTax you will need to provide and create your own 5-digit PIN number. These numbers are arbitrary created and assigned by you. Do not confuse these numbers with the IRS IP PIN number. Don't get them mixed up, these are not apples to apples but more of apples to oranges in terms of submission.

Submit and expect acceptance email or notification from the IRS.

Happy Filing!

You the man! Great tip! I was losing my mind. I appreciate the help.

my Taxes were rejected by federal because my son inadvertantly claimed himself as a dependent (his first year doing taxes himself). The error from TurboTax was to create a IRS IP PIN, which I did and entered per your instructions (thank you).  I also had my son amend his return and refile with the correct info.  Is that everything I need to do to get my taxes acepted?

Yes,assuming nothing else is wrong with your return; i.e., that you don't get some additional error code when you efile again.   The workaround for that "dependent claimed self" rejection error is new this year.  The IRS allows the first-listed filer (primary filer) on the parent's return to get an IP PIN and resubmit the efile.   This, hopefully, prevents the parent from having to file a paper return by mail.    Anecdotal reports in this forum state that it does work.   And yes, it was correct to have the son amend his return to correctly indicate that someone else can claim him.

Please report back with your results when you find out your efile results.

Excellent writeup. I have been confused about this since 2019. You finally cleared it up for me. Thank you!

You are most welcome!

Thank you! It would be nice if there was a "jump to" for this. I have wasted so much time this year looking for things in TurboTax that should be a "jump to" or made very apparent. I am not impressed with TurboTax 2024!

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!  NO where does it say that you will need TWO pins!  Why isn't the IP-PIN on the same page as the usual PIN.  I have spent so much time trying to get these taxes filed and FINALLY, you helped me.   Turbo Tax is not what it used to be......I've probably used it for 20 years and this year has been the worst.  Not sure I'll get it next year.  Any suggestions of others?   Again, THANK YOU!  and Happy Easter!
