Sports Referee

I am a sports referee and received a 1099-NEC. I am not an employee for payer (the amount earned in box one is nonemployee compensation). Would this income be considered sporadic activity or a hobby since I am not an employee? I filled out a W-9 for the payer and not a W-4.

If so, this would be added to "other income" correct?

No, this is a side job. You need to report all earned income from a side job, freelance work as self-employment income. We have instructions for entering your income from self-employment.

When you're self-employed, you'll be able to deduct your business expenses. See Where do I enter my self-employment business expenses, like home office, vehicle mileage, and supplies?
