Yes, you can still file your return but, depending on the state, you may have to file by mail.

For most states, this information is not required in order to efile your taxes, but could help speed up the processing of your return and will not affect your return’s submission. If your state won't accept an efiled return without the State ID/Driver's License, you will have to file the state return by mail.

When you come to the screen that asks for your state ID or Driver's License, leave it blank and select "Continue". If the program does not permit you to efile or file by mail, you will have to Contact Us for one-on-one support.

In an effort to help protect your identity and fight tax Fraud, the IRS and State tax offices are now asking that tax filers provide their driver’s license or state issued ID number. Omitting any of this information may delay return and refund processing.

Some states, however, do require an ID to be provided in order to e-file (e.g. Illinois and Alabama).

For these states (and others) the following website provides information on getting a State-issued ID: DMV.org. Select the License and ID tab, then the Identification cards option from the menu.

For additional information, you can view the IRS information on the New Security Safeguards. or to see if your state is participating, please contact your state revenue agency.

That is not true. I e-filed jointly with my spouse, in NY, with turbo tax on Jan 31. I had my driver's license. My spouse, unfortunately, had lost hers with her wallet. So she did not have her driver license or other state ID (she does have other government ID, but not state, so there was no option to provide it).

my return was e-filed by turbotax, and NY reported it accepted the same day.

However, I now wish it hadn't been. Because now my refund is delayed, because my return is awaiting extra review, and while they don't give a reason, I'm 90% sure it's because it was e-filed by one spouse jointly but without including the other spouse's ID.

Very frustrating. I filed early to avoid expected delays this year, but if I had waited for her to get new ID from the state of NY it might have taken less time than what I'm now facing. Now she does have it, but the thing is already filed and under a manual review process, so I don't know that there's anything I can do now to speed things up. I just have to wait, and maybe get a letter from the Dept of Taxation and Finance asking us to provide a copy of her ID, if that's what they do to verify.

This, of course, is why one should do everything possible to avoid being owed a refund.now I'm giving an interest free loan to the state of New York because I let my employer withhold too much from my paychecks. ugh.

NY, IL, and AL definitely require a license to file a return. Only one person on the return must have it for the return to be filed. How each state will handle it this year is unknown.

I am ready to file our taxes. My husband no longer has a drivers license. How do I file. He has a military ID but it was not accepted.

As you’ll note in the thread above, a driver’s license isn’t required for you to file your taxes – it’s merely an additional level of security the IRS and some states want for identity verification. In a worst case scenario, you’ll just need to file your return by mail.

States have different policies relating to the requirement. What state are you filing a return for, or from?
