I had files my federal and state taxes in the tax year 2019. The federal went through but not my state. I didn't see that the taxes never went through so didn't look back. Now I have a form from the state saying I have to pay back tax and penalty! How could this happen?

Did the state return go though but not the tax due payment?  I assume you efiled and mean the tax payment?

Your only proof of payment is your bank statement or credit card showing the payment coming out. Turbo Tax only passes your bank account number to the state for the state to take it out of your account. But most states do not let you pay by Direct Debit so you have to mail in a check or go directly to the state's website to pay.

Check the printout or PDF of your return; look for the state cover sheet with the Turbo Tax logo. If you owed tax, it will show the payment information and how/when you decided to pay. Read the state payment instructions carefully since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system and requires additional steps.

Well the return didn't go through either. my state contacted me asking why I never filed my state tax return. I feel like something is missing here. I can see that I should have sent a payment but why would the state never have received my state taxes?

@maxwell-bean No one else can see your account so we do not know what happened to your state return.   Did you e-file?

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.   What does it show in your TurboTax account?

If your state return was rejected you will need to print, sign and mail it now.    And your only proof that you paid your state tax due would be your own bank or credit card records, so if you did not pay, you need to do so when you file the return.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.
