Question

State tax software failure to import data and visit crucial categories

The step-by-step has come to a dead end and doesn't even allow me to back up or start over.  It simply demands that I accept an unpaid tax amount and a penalty when it has never taken me to the estimated-taxes-paid section or entered the 1099 numbers from my Federal return.  I've been a TurboTax user for over 15 years, and I've never before had such trouble even getting questions acknowledged, let alone getting helpful answers.

If you are using the Download/Desktop version, you will need to make sure you have updated your software.  To manually update for Windows, please see the Help Article here.  For Mac, please see this Help Article.

I've updated the software every time it asks, but now the problem has gotten A LOT worse.

I had just passed the final Federal check and was about to submit with a refund of about $1,750 applied to my 2023 estimated taxes when I decided to take a last look at the completed forms.  There I saw, for the first time, Form 2210.  At the very bottom it had a notation saying 'possible penalty $16'  I clicked on it, and was delivered into disaster -- the Estimated Tax Payments statement in step-by-step with something about a possible penalty.  I clicked to see what that was about, and my refund immediately disappeared.  The first question focused on the timing of about $13,000 in estimated payments, of which $7000 came in Q4.  This reflects the fact that my entire RMD (from which $9,159 was withheld) was taken two days before the end of the year! The $7000 was about $1,750 more than I needed; thus the refund.  Maybe that could trigger a $16 penalty.  But Form 2210 didn't stop there.  It demanded a quarter-by-quarter accounting of every other dividend, capital gain and other not-yet-taxed 2022 income.  From at least 50 holdings over six financial accounts!  And I am simply unable to do that because I'm preparing for an extended trip next week.  So PLEASE:  Show me how to get Form 2210 out of the way so I can get these taxes filed correctly and quickly.  Thank you!

You may not actually have an Underpayment Penalty.  Type 'Underpayment penalty' in the Search area, then 'Jump to underpayment penalty'.

If you see an amount for an underpayment penalty, Continue to answer the questions.  If you had no underpayment in 2021, you should be exempt in 2022.

Here's more info on Form 2210.
